I was loaned this high-end rifle with a high-end optic, but no magazine, factory manual, sight, and disassembly tools. I have quite a bit of experience firing the military SCAR, both light and heavy versions, in pre-production and prototype versions. I was curious what the final version commercial model would do, especially after reviewing the much-ballyhooed ACR.
Upon initial review, I was impressed with the SCAR package. It looks professional and well engineered. Despite looking heavier, it is a more "lively" weapon than the ACR. The ACR, on the other hand, looks light, but its weight is unmistakable and slow. The SCAR handles like the M4; ACR recalls the defunct HK OICWor G36. The SCAR actually uses more plastic in construction than the ACR, and uses an aluminum upper receiver with some steel inserts. Colored in some approximation of FDE brown, SCAR colors are not all. Matches depending on the light. This pigment function affects different materials in unique ways. $2500 will not get you a monolithic rifle.
Why Do Navy Seals Hate The Scar?
The carbine operates on a short-stroke piston, which taps into a long rectangular angled techno-chic crude bolt carrier/piston rod assembly near the gas block. But you can get an M4 in action at about half the speed of this SCAR.
Like the ACR, the stock offers a limited adjustment cheekpiece. But the SCAR version looks cheaper, and while easier to use, the ACR version is in a stronger position.

Most of the controls are similar to AR in function and placement. Ambi capability has been added for mag catch and selector. Unlike the ACR, the SCAR selector lever is a good design, usable in all shooting positions and does not interfere with the trigger finger. .
However, both bolt magazine catches are more rigid in operation, and require a wider range of motion than the M4. Magazine seating is more difficult than AR. The bolt catch is so stiff in operation that after reloading, the sensation is that the bolt catch is not engaged and the bolt back is not locked. It's very heavy. An operator can get used to anything, but in this case, the transition from AR is not as smooth.
We all failed to get out of SCAR! Yes, a million dollar wonderrifle will not fire the most popular polymer magazine on the market. You have to take them out. In fact, a typical lancer will not sit reliably.

A lot has been done with the reciprocating bolt handle. Most guns have had this feature for years, including the venerable M1 and M14 rifles. Why did it suddenly become bad? With the SCAR, when placed on the left side of the weapon for auxiliary hand use, it is difficult for a right-handed shooter to avoid or hold the weapon administratively, such as locking the bolt open.

The only potential benefit is for private tinkering hobbyists, who will occupy themselves with modifying barrels and optics.

Furthermore, an AR style complete upper assembly is a more practical and economical way to instantly change the capabilities of your rifle. A pre-zero upper assembly complete with sighting system goes on in under a minute. Because use SCAR (and ACR).
