Hand Gun Reviews - The new Ruger-57 pistol is a very special handgun chambered in 5.7×28mm. Developed by FN in the 1980s, the 5.7x28mm (5.7) pistol cartridge is a small-caliber, high-velocity pistol cartridge based on the 5.56x45mm SS109 NATO round. The ammo is fast, delivering a velocity of about 2,000 feet per second after exiting the 5-inch barrel. Ruger, here in the United States, introduced their Model 57 in late December 2019, which uses the 5.7x28mm cartridge. I was offered the first Ruger-57 pistol "hot off the press" to review and share with you.
In my mind, there is no doubt that the 5.7x28mm cartridge is an excellent cartridge that offers some advantages. The 5.7 round case and bullet have been reduced in size for better performance than the 9x19mm. The round has a long and thin design as shown in the image above. 4 times longer than its diameter. This compares to the standard 9mm width, which is 1.5 times wider. The 5.7x28mm round, compared to others, is aimed behind the bullet. So when the 5.7 round hits the target, the bullet hits or travels forward and freezes to the side, creating a large wound cavity. This helps transfer the bullet's energy to the target more efficiently, and is less likely to over-penetrate objects behind it. Thus, a large wound cavity; more energy transfer; Low penetration; Further expansion. Many people say that the 5.7mm has one-third the NATO and two-thirds the 9x19mm. The pressure level of the cartridge is so low that the pistol operates from the impact and helps to lower the pistol. I had to shoot it for myself to see what the recoil was like and compare it to the FN 5.7 pistol I reviewed here in December 2016.

5.7 There are different opinions about cartridges and pistols, and it depends on how you define and measure "work". Although criticized by gun control groups, the ATF investigation found no commercial ammunition for the civilian market. According to some, the 5.7 pistol could defeat a ballistic weapon. The second generation 5.7 cartridge was developed for the law enforcement and civilian markets. The "LF" (non-lead SS195LF) rounds can be used for training and law enforcement purposes, while the SS197SR sport rounds are used for civilians, as the US SS195LF unarmored bores are prohibited, at point blank range (HP). ) round consisting of a completely stainless primer and projection. Some say the cost of shooting the 5.7x28mm is a major drawback. Think about it. The civilian grade SS197SR costs about $20. For 50 rounds, SS195LF HP rounds are about $25 for 50 rounds. So, now shoot .45 ACP (eg Speer Gold Dot 230 grain HP $28 - 50 rounds) and other caliber rounds (eg Federal Premium .40 S&W 155 grain HP $28 - 50 rounds for preference).
The 5.7 is now in service with military and police forces in more than 40 countries, including Canada, France, Spain, Greece, India, Poland, and the United States, including the United States Secret Service, some branches of the Navy, and the Federal Security Service. Some say the internal trigger of the Ruger Double Action 5.7 is not a SAO striker, but always screams when there is a round in the chamber. No Decker. So I had to try the 5.7 for myself to see if this unique gun and caliber worked for me, even if the 9mm was superior. Here are my 10 criteria and factors that I use to evaluate a gun, so I will apply them to the Ruger-57. In addition to my criteria, there are other subjective features that may appeal to some, such as a certain style, mag release location, movement, caliber, appearance, number of mags included, type of sights/modification, axis, rail, grip angle, portless or ported, including holster and bag, customer service, etc. So, I added them to the last variety of criteria. I have to admit that all gun selection decisions come down to trade-offs, but I want all criteria to be met. I scored 10 points for each of the 10 criteria for a possible 100 points. I wanted to shoot this pistol and bought a 5.7x28mm Federal American Eagle, 40 grain shot, AE5728A. Ammu is very easy and you can shop for the best price. 5.7 War FN is proposed by Herstle, Federal and Speaker. I got through this supply so quickly that I had to shoot more to try it out. I appreciate Ruger donating a few more shots. This gun was a lot of fun to shoot and I was amazed at its accuracy, no muzzle rise and very smooth fire for such a light gun. I enjoyed shooting about 400 rounds and could not put this pistol down. I usually shoot 500 rounds in a few days before I decide if I want to use the gun and how to use it. Below are my ratings for each of the 10 criteria for the Ruger-57 for home defense and shooting purposes. I also wondered if this light pistol with a 4.9 inch barrel and 5.6 inch height could be a pistol. For me, it wasn't too heavy, too big, or difficult to hide. I know some people get it. I wanted to put the gun through its paces and check damage, stopping power, accuracy and reliability. Thanks to Reger for giving me a few rounds to shoot Federal American Eagle and FNH to test and evaluate my pistol.
This Ruger-57 pistol performed exceptionally well. No damage and no recoil and I love the 20 round capacity. He mastered all kinds of shots without any problem. I was surprised to find so little emotion and no knocking. I can honestly say the recoil was less than my 9mm and more like my .22 mag round. The slide was light and smooth as butter when collapsing, and loading and unloading the mag was a breeze. The Mags went down the well quickly and easily. He performed very well. I was impressed with its short, smooth, light and clean trigger pulls, similar to my single-action pistol, even though it was already double-action. I love the ergonomics and lines on this gun. Despite being a polymer, it felt solid in my hand while being very light. It felt very comfortable in my hand, and the medium-aggressive sustain texture was just right for me. The grip is quite thin, but long and apparently wide enough to hold 20 rounds. The grip was just right and comfortable for me for my average hands. Again, I want to focus on soft fire and the recoil from this gun is minimal. Excellent features and performance for increased accuracy. Below I present my thoughts on each of the criteria after testing my range.
Accuracy was acceptable at various distances, especially 10-25 yards, but shoot it to make a decision based on your abilities, skills and budget.

Accuracy of the Reg-57 was good for me from 5 yards to 25 yards. This old coder was very happy, but the gun did most of the work. I didn't have to adjust the rear sights for elevation or windage. After fine tuning, my hits were pretty good. 4.75#
